 BlackBeats.FM: Hallo Henry Smith. Willkommen zum Interview mit BlackBeats.FM, Deutschlands Webradiostation für Hip Hop und BlackMusic. Wie geht es dir?Henry Smith: Ich fühle mich geehrt, danke. BlackBeats.FM: Du bist in Hannover geboren, aber anschließend mit deiner Mutter in die USA gezogen. Was war der Grund für diesen Umzug? Fühlst du dich trotzdem auf irgendeine Art und Weise mit Deutschland verbunden? Henry Smith: Meine Mutter ist im Alter von 20 Jahren von Ghana nach Deutschland gekommen. Sie hat sehr hart gearbeitet und hatte 3 Jobs. Sie hat stets ihr bestes für meine Schwester und mich getan. Es war schon immer einmal ihr Traum nach Amerika zu gehen. Also nutzte sie die Chance, als die Gelegenheit kam. Es ist wirklich lustig, ich spreche kaum deutsch, fühle mich aber trotzdem mit dem Land, den Freunden und der Familie dort verbunden. Als ich dann etwas älter wurde, spielte ich sehr viel mit meinem Cousin, dem Footballer A. Samuel und seinem jüngeren Bruder. BlackBeats.FM: Als du drei Jahre alt warst bemerkte deine Mutter, dass du ein besonderes Talent hast. Wie hat sie es entdeckt? Henry Smith:Wir saßen in einem Zug auf dem Weg nach Frankfurt oder Wolfsburg und ich hielt eine Spielzeug-Gitarre in meiner Hand, als ich zu singen und tanzen anfing. Die Menschen jubelten meiner Mutter und mir zu. Von da an war ihr klar, dass in mir ein Talent schlummert. BlackBeats.FM: Deinen ersten Auftritt hattest du mit 14 in der Highschool. Der Erfolg dieser Talent-Show brachte dich dazu, den Gesang weiterzuführen. Was ist dann passiert? Henry Smith: Ich ging zum College, wurde Sportler und verliebte mich in Mädchen (lach). In meiner Pubertät trat die Musik in den Hintergrund. BlackBeats.FM: Viele Künstler gaben dir im Bereich Musik Inspirationen. Aber wer war der Ausschlaggebende? Henry Smith: Auf jeden Fall Michael Jackson. Er war meine größte Inspiration. Ich lernte seine Dance-Moves und sang ständig “Beat it“ und “Billy Jean“. ”Smooth Criminal” und ”Thriller” lief immer auf Repeat. Ich wollte Michael Jackson sein (lach). BlackBeats.FM: Wie startete deine Zusammenarbeit mit 341 Music Group? Henry Smith: Mein Bruder Flo wählte mich für eine Hook eines Songs von US-Rapper Reddy Roc aus. Wir sprachen über Musik, er zeigte mir eine paar Aufnahmen und ich stieg sofort mit ein. Es war von Anfang an sehr gute Musik gewesen. BlackBeats.FM: Deine Stimme ist so gut, dass du sogar teilweise mit Künstlern, wie NeYo, Trey Songz und Chris Brown nahegestellt wirst. Was bedeutet es für dich? Henry Smith: Zuerst einmal fühle ich mich natürlich geehrt. Ich bin Gott dafür sehr dankbar, dass er mir diese Stimme geschenkt hat. Zweitens zeigt es mir, dass es nicht mehr lange dauert, bis die Welt meinen Namen kennt. Ich tue einfach nur das, was ich liebe... Musik machen! BlackBeats.FM: An welchen Projekten wirst du dieses Jahr teilnehmen? Ist ein neues Album oder ähnliches geplant? Henry Smith: Es befindet sich derzeit eine EP von mir bei ITunes, welches “Date Night“ heißt. Ich arbeite auch derzeit an einem R&B- und Soulalbum, welches im Sommer erscheinen wird. Es wird hot! BlackBeats.FM: Wie hat sich die Musikszene entwickelt? Meinst du es geht in die richtige Richtung oder findest du, dass die Oldschool-Musik besser ist bzw. war wie die heutige Musik? Henry Smith: Ich bin einfach ehrlich. Ich liebe die Musik der 80er und 90er Jahre. Ich respektiere die Musik von heute, aber ich fühle sie nicht so sehr. Das ist meine Meinung dazu. BlackBeats.FM: Was ist dein größter Wunsch und wieso genau dieser? Henry Smith: Ich würde gerne Studios in Deutschland, Ghana und den USA eröffnen. Studios, die Tanzräume für Nachwuchskünstler, einen Green-Room für Musikvideos haben und mit neuester Technik ausgestattet sind. Ich würde sehr gerne Kinder von Problemen und der Straße fernhalten und ihnen einen Nachmittagsprogramm bieten. Ich hatte damals nie diese Ressourcen zur Verfügung, deshalb denke ich, dass es heutzutage sehr helfen würde und cool ist. BlackBeats.FM: Vielen Dank für das nette Interview. Welcome to the interview with BlackBeats.FM, Germanys webradio station for Hip Hop and Black Music. How are you? Henry Smith: I'm blessed thanks. BlackBeats.FM: You were born in Hannover / Germany but then moved with your mother to the USA. What was the reason for this move and do you still feel connected with the country Germany? Henry Smith: My mother came to Germany from Ghana in her early 20's. She worked hard had 3 jobs and did her best to support myself and my sister. it was always her dream to go to the U.S. so she took the chance when the opportunity came. it's funny I can't speak a link of German but I still feel connected to the country friends and family. The late Blues musician and German citizen Louisiana Red used to baby sit me and when I was a Little bit older I used to play around with my cousins footballer A. Samuel and his younger brother. BlackBeats.FM: When you were 3 years your mother recognized that you are special and have a certain talent. How she has found it? Henry Smith: We were on a train to frankfurt or wolfsburg and I had a toy guitar in my hand and started singing and dancing the entire time. People laughed and cheered me on my mother said. She knew from that point on that I had a gift. BlackBeats.FM: You did your first performance at the age of 14 in the high school. The success at this talent show made you to continue it necessarily. What happened then? Henry Smith: I went to college became a athlete and fell in love with girls lol. Music kinda took a back seat until I got to my sophomore junior years. BlackBeats.FM: A lot of artists gave you inspirations for your music. But who did it especially and why? Henry Smith: Michael Jackson for sure. he was my biggest inspiration I use to study his dance moves and sing beat and Billy jean all the time. i had smooth criminaI and thriller on repeat. I wanted to be Michael Jackson lol BlackBeats.FM: How did your collaboration with 341 Music Group started? Henry Smith: My brother Flo hit me up for a hook for a dope US rapper named Reddy Roc. We talked music he showed me some records and I jumped on. It was sweet music from that point on. BlackBeats.FM: Your voice is so good that you'll even equated with artists like Neyo, Trey Songsz and Chris Brown? What does it means to you? Henry Smith: First of It makes me feel blessed and very appreciative towards my heavenly father God for the gift he gave me. Secondly it tells me that it won't be long until the world knows my name. i jus gotta keep doing what i love....make music BlackBeats.FM: On which projects you're going to participate this year? Is a new album or anything else planned? Henry Smith: I got a ep called ”Date Night” on ITunes right now. I'm also working on a full R&B soul album for the summer it's gonna be hot. BlackBeats.FM: How the music scene has developed? Do you think it goes in the right direction or do you still think that the oldschool music was still better than today? Henry Smith: I can't lie I'm a big fan of the 80's and 90's sound. I respect the music today but I'm not feeling a lot of it. That's my opinion though. BlackBeats.FM: What is your biggest wish and why? Henry Smith: To open major studios in Germany Ghana and the US like the hit factory and quad studios. Studios that have a dance wing for young and up n coming dancers a green room for music videos and obviously a state of the art studio. I would love to involve the kids have like a after school program and weekend programs to keep kids off the street and away from trouble. I never had those resources available to me when I was younger so I think it would help and be cool. BlackBeats.FM: Thanks so much for this nice interview. We wish you all the best for the future.
